Young Pioneers

Young Pioneers is a hands-on programme designed to empower kids and young adults with essential life skills and foster self-sufficiency from a young age. Through engaging activities and practical lessons, children will learn valuable techniques for sustainability, resourcefulness, and independence. Our curriculum blends fun with learning, inspiring kids to become confident and capable individuals. Young Pioneers is set at our beautiful community gardens next to Spa Park - the perfect classroom!

Programme Structure:

Introduction to Self-Sufficiency:

  • Understanding the concept of self-sufficiency

  • Importance of sustainability and environmental stewardship

Gardening & Agriculture

  • Soil preparation, planting, and watering

  • Identifying and caring for plants and crops

  • Composting and organic gardening practices

Animal Husbandry:

  • Introduction to raising chickens, rabbits, or small animals

  • Feeding, sheltering, and caring for animals

  • Learning about animal behavior and welfare

Basic Cooking and Nutrition:

  • Cooking simple and nutritious meals using fresh ingredients

  • Understanding food sources and seasonal eating

  • Exploring food preservation techniques: canning, drying, jerky, etc

 DIY Skills:

  • Basic carpentry and woodworking

  • Repairing and repurposing household items

  • Sewing and mending clothes

Bush Craft & Skills

  • Shelter Building: Teach children how to construct shelters using natural materials like branches, leaves, and tarpaulins

  • Fire Starting: Demonstrate safe methods of starting fires using friction, flint and steel, or fire starters.

  • Explore a range of other skills including; wilderness navigation, foraging, tool craft, nature awareness, water sourcing & purification, outdoor cooking, knot tying.

Renewable Energy and Conservation:

  • Introduction to renewable energy sources: solar, wind, and hydro

  • Energy conservation practices at home

  • Recycling and waste reduction strategies

Emergency Preparedness:

  • Basic first aid skills & healthcare

  • Fire safety and emergency evacuation drills

  • Chemicals vs Nature

Entrepreneurship and Financial Literacy:

  • Starting a small business: brainstorming ideas and planning

  • Budgeting and managing finances

  • Marketing and selling products or services at our farmer's market

Community Engagement:

  • Participating in community gardening or clean-up initiatives

  • Sharing skills and knowledge with others

  • Collaborating on local sustainability projects

Culminating Projects and Celebrations:

  • Showcasing skills and accomplishments through presentations

  • Hosting a community event or market to share products and experiences

  • Celebrating achievements and growth as young pioneers

Costs & Dates

Weekly Class Times

Wednesday

9.30am - 11.30am  7 - 10 year olds

3.30pm - 4.30pm  7 - 10 year olds

Costs

$150 term or $15 per class. (1.5 hour lessons x 10 week term)

​

*After-school classes

$120 term or $12 per class. (1 hour lessons x 10 week term).

​

*Pay as you go or book the whole term. Eftpos available. Limited spots available!

Full day/half day bookings

​

We are able to offer multiple lessons over the course of a full day/half day (minimum 20 students).

Please let us know if you have a particular focus i.e. gardening, bush skills, sustainability and we can customise to suit.

Full Day

9am - 3pm $50 per child

​

Half Day

9am - 12pm or 12pm - 3pm $30 per child
